HLPF Side Event - Climate, Fragility and the SDGs: Lessons from Lake Chad

High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2019
The meeting of the high-level political forum on sustainable development in 2019 convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council, will be held from Tuesday, 9 July, to Thursday, 18 July 2019; including the three-day ministerial meeting of the forum from Tuesday, 16 July, to Thursday, 18 July 2019. The theme will be "Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality".
HLPF Side Event - Driving Transformative Change: Foreign Affairs and the 2030 Agenda

Secretary General Stocktaking Meeting
The United Arab Emirates hosted a stocktaking meeting in Abu Dhabi from 30 June to 1 July, 2019 in preparation for the UN Climate Action Summit in September, 2019.
The 50th sessions of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) will convene in Bonn, Germany, from 17-27 June 2019. The Bonn Climate Change conference will address numerous implementation issues under the Convention, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.
The “Berlin Climate and Security Conference” on 4 June brought together leading figures from around the world to discuss the growing risks that climate change presents for peace and security. It is was hosted by Germany as part of its efforts to further integrate climate-related risks into the international security architecture during its two-year term as a UN Security Council elected member.
The European Sustainable Development Week (ESDW) is a European-wide initiative to stimulate and make visible activities, projects and events that promote sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). On this occasion, the Federal Foreign Office and 23 international embassies in Berlin, Germany, are engaging with the 2030 Agenda on the theme "Diplomacy for Sustainability" and will present their work on the SDGs.
Climate change is one of the major challenges of the 21st century, presenting risks to international prosperity and security. Securing international action in response is a key foreign policy challenge.
Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is hosting the 2019 Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development with the theme ‘From crisis response to peacebuilding: Achieving synergies’. The findings of a 2-year study on climate and fragility risks in the Lake Chad region will be launched at the Forum. The study provides recommendations for effective engagement in contexts affected by climate change and fragility.
The aim of the event is to present and discuss a new essay series on the relevance of SDGs to foreign and security policy. In launching this series, we seek to underline the importance of using the SDGs to achieve core foreign policy objectives and engage in a dialogue with foreign policy practitioners on their role in delivering sound practices.
Fourth Session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-4)
The United Nations Environment Assembly is the world’s highest-level decision-making body on the environment. The Assembly meets biennially to set priorities for global environmental policies and develop international environmental law. This year’s theme is “Innovative solutions for environmental challenges and sustainable consumption and production”.
The PSC is the key global event on climate change and security, bringing together high-level policymakers, experts and practitioners to explore concrete actions on development, foreign and security policy to address interlinked climate-security risks in a holistic way. This edition of the PSC will focus on reviewing progress on climate-security action - you are welcome to contribute with your cases by completing our short survey.
COP24 Side-Event: Climate, Peace and Security: Progress toward a Preventive Diplomacy
The European External Action Service, in partnership with adelphi and the Planetary Security Initiative, will host a side-event at COP24 aimed at tracking international progress in addressing climate-related security risks, as well as raising awareness on climate security among the COP community.
Workshop on Middle East Water Security and Environmental Peacebuilding
The workshop is offered by EcoPeace’s Program for Water Security to connect EcoPeace’s experience in the Middle East with the capacity building needs of civil society organizations coping with conflict, poor governance and water insecurity worldwide. Through the Program for Water Security, EcoPeace seeks to create long-term partnerships with civil society organizations worldwide and create a global network of environmental peacebuilders.
The UN climate summits are global conferences, in the course of which action for climate policy is negotiated. This year's summit will include: 24. Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24), 14. Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 14) and the Conference of Signatories to the Paris Agreement (CMA 1).
Chile's rich environment has been increasingly suffering under extreme weather events and contamination. Climate mitigation and adaptation plans throughout the world can help curb this trend, and 2nd Climate Week Chile seeks to gather these initiatives under one roop to discuss and exchange.
Climate Diplomacy Week is a time, when EU Delegations around the world reach out to communities and partner organisations, highlighting positive global action and collaboration on climate change. 2018 saw two Climate Diplomacy Weeks: the first one from 18-24 June and the second one from 24-30 September 2018.
The German Federal Foreign Office and adelphi co-organized the side event “Global Resilience Agenda: A Foreign Policy Perspective on the SDGs” on 17 July 2018 at the High Level Political Forum 2018, which took place in the German Permanent Mission in New York. The event sought to deepen the understanding of the SDGs and geopolitics and the particularities of each region. A range of high-ranking officials from the UN and national governments joined the event, as well as experts from academia and civil society.
Asia-Pacific Climate Week 2018 is designed to advance regional climate action. The ultimate aim of APCW 2018 is to support implementation of countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement on climate change and action to deliver on the SDGs.
