Russia is “playing politics with energy supplies,” said U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson at a major policy speech at the Wilson Center in November. In Europe, the debate is raging over how best to achieve energy security in the face of the twin challenges of Russian dominance and the need to decarbonize the economy. The ongoing securitization of Russian natural gas could not only complicate the road to a low carbon future in Europe, it could also undermine a European integration project that has mostly been a success.

The Hague Declaration, launched at the Planetary Security Conference 2017, leads the way to a scaling-up of climate change as a priority in regional and global security agendas. It is the result of extensive analysis and collaboration within the climate security community and has received wide cross-country and cross-sectoral support. As Director of a co-authoring organization, adelphi's Alexander Carius highlights main features of the Declaration and stresses the importance of concrete commitments.

The UN Security Council is hosting an Arria meeting on ‘Preparing for the security implications of rising temperatures’ on 15 December at the UN headquarters in New York. As climate-induced security threats have become more pressing, the highest body of global governance is slowly taking up the issue again.

The conference will look at the health-related Nexus issues recognizing that with climate change these will increase. It will look at the migration and mobility as governments and stakeholders start to develop the Global Compact on Migration over the next two years.

The UN climate summits are global conferences, in the course of which action for climate policy is negotiated. This year's summit will include: 24. Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24), 14. Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 14) and the Conference of Signatories to the Paris Agreement (CMA 1).

Global warming strongly affects the functioning of natural, anthropogenic and urban systems. The thematic research network of laboratories MiDi proposes this conference on the modifications occurring in the water cycle due to global changes in different environments. This conference is co-organized with the French cluster DREAM.

This panel event will provide an overview of the environmental peacebuilding field and highlight, frame and analyze the efforts of three conservation organizations whose efforts in this area underscore the benefits of this approach to achieving rights-based conservation outcomes.

This policy brief considers the interlinkages between climate change, migration and security. It argues that despite the lack of scientific consensus the potential consequences are too large to ignore and no-regret policy options should be adopted.

While COP-23 took many steps in the right direction, there are a plethora of issues at stake for developing countries that need to be ironed out, such as transparency, pre-2020 climate action, and loss and damage, before the post-2020 international climate policy is rolled out. Dhanasree Jayaram argues that the developing bloc needs to unite for a better and equitable world.
