The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is a non-legally binding agreement designed to reduce existing levels of risk and prevent emerging risks. While references to conflict were deleted from the final text, Sendai addresses issues parallel to those that would need to be addressed in a prevention and sustaining peace agenda.

Climate change, desertification and poverty are consequences of materialism, greed and self-interest: Ecosystem Ambassador John Liu from The Commonwealth Foundation argues that we are now witnessing the results of reckless exploitation of ecosystems and humans, and that consciousness is necessary to overcome our state of confusion and prevent the dangerous consequences of materialism.

"There is no peace without tackling food security and eliminating hunger and there will be no food without tackling climate change.” A couple of days ago, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has published a new and all-encompassing framework on climate change. The organization acknowledges the enormous threats posed by climate change, and outlines how it will tackle environmental changes in the future. The strategy paper is yet another indicator of institutional change: increasingly, organizations worldwide mainstream climate change into their planning.

Many experts worry that climate change is a risk factor for peace. One key mechanism is that climate change is likely to lead to water scarcity, and may disrupt food production in many regions. The risk of public unrest and civil conflicts intensifies, when food prices and availability become more volatile. In this interview, Francesco Femia, Co-Founder and President at the Center for Climate and Security, argues that we should be concerned about price spikes in the Middle East and North Africa region.

"Climate change is really happening now. We see it as a threat multiplier", says Isabella Lövin, Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Climate and Deputy Prime Minister. In the interview, she highlights the 5  pillars for sustaining peace in fragile countries and casts light on severe climate consequences that slow progress on development. A clear answer to the question: What works?

Recovering after a severe crisis may serve as a critical juncture to mainstream adaptation and drive sustainable resilience outcomes. Reflecting on the failures and missed opportunities in the case of reconstruction in Nepal two years after the devastating earthquake, several important lessons can be drawn that will help other world regions better integrate energy access with resilience thinking and adaptation planning.
