At the 2017 Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development, adelphi, in partnership with SIPRI and SEI, convened two sessions on climate change and fragility risks in the Lake Chad region, to discuss the different approaches and next steps for building resilience. Janani Vivekanda, Senior Project Manager at adelphi, shares the outcomes of that workshop.

The video was produced by Paul Müller-Hahl (Lichtbilder Filmproduktion) and directed by Stella Schaller (adelphi), with kind support by the Planetary Security Initiative and the German Federal Foreign Office.

No adaptation approach lasts forever in the face of increasing stresses posed by a changing climate. Think of each such effort's having a 'use-by' date. How then to help strengthen future resilience?

The g7+ is a group of 20 countries affected by conflict and fragility. The General Secretary, Helder de Costa, in this interview explains why climate security is crucually important to land-locked countries and island states. For example, Haiti, Solomon Islands, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Timor Leste and even Comoros are seriously affected by climate change, and require support from the international community.

In an unprecedented move, the G-20 minus 1 decided to include three separate paragraphs on climate change in the final communiqué – one spelling out a general pledge to tackle climate change, a boxed one on the US’ (rather the Trump administration’s) rejection of the Paris Agreement, and one on the rest of the leaders’ reaffirmation of their unconditional support to the Paris agreement. This was reportedly after the US’ demand of inclusion of fossil fuels in the communiqué was rejected by others.

The Mekong River in Southeast Asia is an important source of life for people living within the basin. Sharing the river’s water resources is, however, becoming increasingly  difficult, and has already sparked disputes among riparians. Climate change could potentially increase political instabilities and intensify interstate disputes.

The Orange-Senqu Basin in Southern Africa is among the most developed basins on the African continent. Already affected by severe climate variabilities, future climate change  could worsen existing challenges. Despite a high-level of institutional cooperation between all basin countries, existing water-related disagreements could be aggravated by the impacts of climate change.
