Since the Uri army base attack on 18 September 2016, in which 17 Indian soldiers were killed (called the “deadliest attack on the security forces in Kashmir in two decades”), relations between India and Pakistan have been at an all-time low. While India has provided ample evidence to establish the origin of the attack as Pakistan, the latter continues to be in denial. India has been on a diplomatic and political offensive ever since – attempting to isolate Pakistan globally, carrying out surgical strikes against “launch pads” for terrorists across the Line of Control (LoC) and re-examining some of the existing bilateral treaties, one of them being the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).

In a totally different but connected case, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) has been forced to keep on hold a big project meant to reduce the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) in northern Pakistan, which also includes disputed territory of Gilgit-Baltistan – mainly due to objections raised by India.

Climate-Energy Nexus and the G20 adelphi

What is the current and what will be the future role of the climate energy nexus in the G20? Did the adoption and entry into force of the Paris Agreement influence the agenda of the G20fora or vice versa? To provide answers to these questions, this paper critically assesses, inter alia, the status of approaches to address the climate-energy nexus in the G20 countries and provides recommendations for the climate and energy agenda of the German G20 presidency in 2017.

The Closing Event for the exhibition “Environment, Conflict and Cooperation” (ECC) in Lima takes place on 1 December 2016 at the Pontifica Universdad Católica del Peru (PUCP). The ECC exhibition visualises the growing impact of global environmental change on our world and, in particular, on South America.

The fact that the mining sector through consuming enormous amounts of energy is emitting large amounts of greenhouse gases and contributing to climate change is not surprising. Yet, few people know that the mining sector is particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts. Since climate change exacerbates risks that mining companies are already facing, state and private stakeholders increasingly acknowledge the links between environmental change and the mining industry.

Susanne Dröge

In this four-page comment, Susanne Dröge from SWP discusses what the election of Donald Trump as the new US president will mean for future international climate policy cooperation. She argues that Germany and the EU need a comprehensive new climate diplomacy strategy to deal with the fallout of the US turnaround. Read the full comment here.

Dr Vigya Sharma

Large-scale efforts are being undertaken to address the challenges of improving energy access and of climate change adaptation. Author Dr. Vigya Sharma argues that too little thought is given to identifying links between the two, and that tackling poverty and impacts from climate change in an integrated way stregthens our chances of achieving both objectives.
