Tapping into the co-benefits of low-emission economy in cities

A low-emission transition will require profound changes in terms of infrastructure, business models as well as individual habits. In order to support this process adelphi, WiseEuropa and the Institute for Sustainable Development launched a Polish-German discussion on the benefits of a low-emission economy for local development. The discussion paper draws on this exchange, and offers a basis for further reflection about selected benefits based on evidence from Germany and Poland.

The award-winning film "The Age of Consequences", tours around the world and will be screened this December and in 2017 in the Netherlands, Sweden and several US states. It is an illuminating call to action, highlighting the manifold security threats posed by climate change from a US military perspective.

In his speech at COP22, U.S. State Secretary John Kerry highlighted that "there’s nothing partisan about climate change for the world scientists who are near unanimous in their conclusion that climate change is real, it is happening, human beings for the most part are causing it, and we will have increasing catastrophic impacts on our way of life if we don’t take the dramatic steps necessary to reduce the carbon footprint of our civilization." At COP23 in November 2017, he wants to attend as "Citizen Kerry".

Global Climate and Security Consensus Statement

Planetary Security Initiative

Now that the at times turbulent US election has past, attention must return to cooperating on the global challenges that affect us all, like climate change which 23 high profile military leaders and experts from around the world have today labelled as a threat to peace and stability. In a joint Global Climate and Security Consensus Statement issued by the Climate Security Working Group, the signatories have called for world leaders to address climate risk in their national, regional and international security planning.

Incentives for Climate Action in China - Interview with Fergus Green

Climate change mitigation has a number of co-benefits. Climate policy consultant and researcher Fergus Green, based at the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE), explains the top three incentives for Chinese leaders to devote resources to climate action: (1) Energy security, (2) Health, and (3) Opportunities to boost economic growth by manufacturing green technologies.

Environmental Security in India - Event Series at Manipal University

Manipal University is organising a thematic seminar series on “Environmental Security in India” in November 2016, under the auspices of the Climate Diplomacy initiative supported by the German Federal Foreign Office. As a part of the ongoing efforts to build the University’s research and development base in environmental studies and climate change, it seeks to establish synergies between fundamental research in natural (physical) sciences, engineering, security and policy, especially in the environmental and climate policy domains.
